Worcestershire is one of the country’s most beautiful counties, perhaps best known for its idyllic black & white villages situated amidst stunning scenic landscape and its noted Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (A.O.N.B). The county is traditionally noted for its abundant fruit farming. The Vale of Evesham to the east has its reputed Plum and Asparagus Festivals, and across towards the west where there are abundant hop fields and vines, there are business-leading fermenters of wines, ciders, perries and beers.
The city of Worcester boasts great historical significance being the site of the ending the English Civil War with the Battle of Worcester in 1651.There is a wealth of historical architecture throughout the county; perhaps most notably the Norman/Gothic Cathedral which is the striking backdrop of the legendary County Cricket Ground. It was here in the cathedral that Sir Edward Elgar’s (born just outside of Worcester) revised version of the Enigma Variations was first performed during the 1899 Three Choirs Festival. This world renowned festival is still enjoyed each August between the “Three Counties” cathedrals of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester.
Worcester is the largest settlement and the administrative seat of the county. Excluding this city the largest town in the county is Redditch and other principal settlements are Bromsgrove, Stourport-on-Severn, Droitwich, Evesham, Kidderminster and Malvern, while smaller towns include Bewdley, Pershore, Tenbury Wells and Upton upon Severn.
