Henley Home Search
Situated by the River Thames within easy reach of London, Henley-on-Thames, generally referred to as ‘Henley’, sits at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in an area surrounded by glorious countryside, much of which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
A 12th century South Oxfordshire town, Henley’s historic heart sits alongside the river Thames. The main street has many Georgian frontages covering older buildings and among the 300 buildings within the town designated ‘of special architectural or historical interest’ are St Mary’s Church, the town hall, and Henley Bridge. Today, the town enjoys a bustling market square, many boutique shops, a wide variety of fine restaurants, and its own theatre.
Henley is best known for its Royal Regatta, which takes place along one of the most scenic stretches of the River Thames for four days in late June. The elite Leander Club founded in 1818 is the most famous rowing club in the world, and in 1839 an annual regatta was established. In 1851 Prince Albert became its first royal patron and it became known as Henley Royal Regatta.
A railway branch line from Twyford opened in 1857 to bring visitors to the regatta, but it also brought in commuters and sparked a building boom. A picturesque and relaxed town, the medieval streets of Henley have brick-and-flint cottages with tile roofs, but there are also roads of Victorian terraced houses, larger Victorian and Edwardian semi-detached and detached houses, and modern homes on the outskirts.
A Henley home search is often prompted by its good selection of both private and state schools, easy access to the M4 and M40 motorways and good commuter links to London including Crossrail at nearby Reading due to open in 2019. These factors have put Henley in great demand from those who view the town and its surrounding villages as a desirable place to live.
